Thomas JD Fuller

Thomas James Duncan Fuller (born March 17, 1808 in Hardwick , Caledonia County , Vermont , †  February 13, 1876 in Upperville , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1857 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Fuller attended the public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in Calais (Maine) in his new profession. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1848, Fuller was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Maine . There he took over from Israel Washburn on March 4, 1849 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1857 , which were overshadowed by increasing tensions in the run-up to the civil war. From 1853 to 1855 Thomas Fuller was chairman of the trade committee.

In 1856, Fuller renounced another candidacy. After leaving the US House of Representatives, President James Buchanan appointed him second auditor to the Treasury Department. He held this office between 1857 and 1861. In the following years until his death, Fuller worked as a lawyer. Among other things, he negotiated cases before the Supreme Court in Washington. Thomas Fuller died on February 13, 1876 while visiting his son in Virginia. He was buried in Washington.
