James B. Longley

James B. "Jim" Longley Jr. (born July 7, 1951 in Lewiston , Maine ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 1997 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Longley is a son of former Maine Governor James B. Longley (1924–1980). He attended Phillips Academy in Andover and the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester . After completing a law degree at the University of Maine and admission to the bar, he began to practice in his new profession. In 1976 he served with the U.S. Marine Corps . At the time, Longley was also working as his father's private secretary. He later ran various small businesses in the Portland area in addition to his legal work .

Politically, Longley joined the Republican Party . In 1994 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Maine . There he took over from the Democrat Thomas Andrews on January 3, 1995 . Since he was defeated by Tom Allen two years later , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1997 . During this time he campaigned for a strong national defense.

In 1998, James Longley ran for the governor of Maine without success. In these elections he only got 19% of the vote. The election victory went to incumbent Angus King .
