Stephen Lindsey
Stephen Decatur Lindsey (born March 3, 1828 in Norridgewock , Maine , † April 26, 1884 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Stephen Lindsey attended his homeland public schools and then the Broomfield Academy . After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1853, he began to practice in Norridgewock in his new profession. Between 1857 and 1860 he was also an administrative clerk at the County Court in Somerset County .
Politically, Lindsey was a member of the Republican Party . In 1856 he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives . Between 1868 and 1870 he was a member of the State Senate , of which he was President in 1869. In 1860 and 1868 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions , at which Abraham Lincoln and later Ulysses S. Grant were nominated as presidential candidates. In 1874, Lindsey was a member of the Maine Governing Council.
In 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Maine . There he took over from Edwin Flye on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . During this time, the reconstruction in the states of the former confederation ended . In 1882, Lindsey declined to run again. Subsequently he worked as a lawyer again until his death in 1884.
