James A. Burke
James Anthony Burke (born March 30, 1910 in Boston , Massachusetts , † October 13, 1983 ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1979 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Burke attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Suffolk University . He then worked for the City of Boston as Registrar of Vital Statistics . During the Second World War he served in the US Army intelligence service in the South Pacific . He served on the administration of the Massachusetts General Court for ten years . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . At times he was their deputy state chairman. He was also a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives .
In the 1958 congressional election , Burke was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th constituency of Massachusetts , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1959. After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1979 . Since 1963 Burke represented the eleventh district of his state. During this period, the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair took place . In 1978 Burke declined to run again.
After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, James Burke withdrew into retirement, which he spent in Milton . He died in Boston on October 13, 1983.
