Richard Edmund Neal (born February 14, 1949 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Since 1989 he has represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard Neal attended Springfield Technical High School until 1968 and then the American International College until 1972 , also in Springfield. This was followed by studies at the University of Hartford in Connecticut until 1976 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1973 to 1978 he served as an advisor to the Mayor of Springfield; between 1978 and 1984 he sat on the local council. After that he was mayor of his hometown from 1984 to 1988.

In the 1988 election , Neal was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second congressional constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Edward Boland on January 3, 1989 . He has always been re-elected, most recently in 2018. Since 2013 he has represented the first constituency of his state in the House of Representatives. He is a member of the Committee on Ways and Means , which he has also chaired since 2019, and two sub-committees. In previous legislative periods he was a member of the banking committee, among other things . In April 2019, as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, he demanded that President Donald Trump see the personal tax returns for the past six years, which was necessary to investigate his behavior. Trump had promised in the presidential election campaign in 2016 to publish it, but had backed away from it.
