Ambrose Ranney

Ambrose Arnold Ranney (born April 17, 1821 in Townshend , Windham County , Vermont , †  March 5, 1899 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1887 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ambrose Ranney attended Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ) until 1844 . After a subsequent law degree in Woodstock and his admission to the bar in 1848, he began to work in this profession in Boston. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1855 and 1857 he was an advisor to the city of Boston. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1857, 1863, and 1864 .

In the congressional election of 1880 , Ranney was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Walbridge A. Field on March 4, 1881 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1887 . In 1886 he was defeated by the Democrat Leopold Morse . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Ambrose Ranney practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Boston on March 5, 1899.
