William H. Bates
William Henry Bates (born April 26, 1917 in Salem , Massachusetts , † June 22, 1969 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1950 and 1969 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Bates was the son of Congressman George J. Bates (1891-1949). He attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1936 the Worcester Academy . He then studied until 1940 at Brown University in Providence ( Rhode Island ). Between 1940 and 1950, including during World War II , he served in the US Navy . During this time, he took an economics course at Harvard University in 1947 .
Politically, Bates was a member of the Republican Party . After the death of his father, who was killed in a plane crash, he was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the due by-election for the sixth seat of Massachusetts , where he took his new seat on February 14, 1950 started. After ten re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 22, 1969 . During this time the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement fell . In addition, the Vietnam War began at that time . Between 1953 and 1955, Bates was chairman of the special committee to investigate the severance payments for dependents of deceased members of the armed forces.
