Augustus Peabody Gardner
Augustus Peabody Gardner (born November 5, 1865 in Boston , Massachusetts , † January 14, 1918 in Macon , Georgia ) was an American politician . Between 1902 and 1917 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Augustus Gardner was the uncle of Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. He attended St. Paul's School in Concord ( New Hampshire ) and then studied at Harvard University until 1886 . At the same university he also studied law, but without ever working as a lawyer. Instead, he managed his extensive estate. During the Spanish-American War , he served as a captain on General James H. Wilson's staff . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Massachusetts Senate in 1900 and 1901 .
After the resignation of MP William H. Moody , Gardner was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the by-election due for the sixth seat of Massachusetts , where he took up his new mandate on November 4, 1902. After eight re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on May 15, 1917 . From 1905 to 1909 he was chairman of the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions . While in Congress, the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified.
Gardner's resignation came after the American entry into the First World War . He rejoined the United States Army and was stationed in a training camp in Macon. He died there on January 14, 1918.
