Henry Laurens Dawes (born October 30, 1816 in Cummington , Massachusetts , †  February 5, 1903 in Pittsfield , Massachusetts) was an American politician . As a US Senator for his home state of Massachusetts, he was best known for the Dawes Act .

Life

After graduating from Yale University in 1839, he taught for some time in Greenfield and wrote for the "Greenfield Gazette". In 1842 he was admitted to the bar and began practicing law in North Adams , where he headed The Transcript for some time. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1848/49 and 1852, the Massachusetts Senate in 1850 and the Constitutional Convention of his state in 1853. From 1853 to 1857 he was a federal attorney for the western county of Massachusetts.

From March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1875 he was a Republican MP in the United States House of Representatives for changing constituencies of Massachusetts. In 1875 he succeeded Charles Sumner as US Senator, which he remained until 1893.

During this long stint in legislation, he worked in the House of Representatives on election, alternative search and seizure committees, and played a significant role in anti -slavery and restoration efforts during and after the Civil War , in customs legislation, and in establishing a fish commission and a daily one Weather forecast . In the Senate, he was chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee and was very committed to enforcing the law for the benefit of the Indians.

After he left the Senate in 1893, he became chairman of the Commission of the Five Civilized Tribes (sometimes called the Dawes Commission) and worked here for ten years, working for the tribes to erase public claims on their land and dissolve tribal administrations negotiated with the aim of making the tribes part of the United States.

Henry Laurens Dawes died on February 5, 1903 in Pittsfield, where he was also buried.
