Greenfield is a city in Franklin County , Massachusetts and the seat of the county. It has 17,456 residents according to the 2010 census and is the only town in the county with a population greater than 10,000.
geography
The city is located at the intersection of the Mohawk Trail or Massachusetts Route 2 in the east-west direction with Interstate 91 in the north-south direction. The city was founded in 1686 and declared a city in 1753.
The original Pocumtuc Indian population who lived in the area were expelled by the Mohawk tribe in 1664 .
