Field of activity

The Rudolf-Römer-Sternwarte was founded on November 17th, 1971 under the name Astronomisches Praktikum Rheinhausen - APR - the Sternwarte Neanderhöhe Hochdahl eV - SNH . According to the decision of the general meeting in 1979 it was named Rudolf-Römer-Sternwarte. It offers the citizens over 200 hours of astronomical training. Everyone has the opportunity to learn about space and the work of the observatory. The telescopes can be used here under expert guidance. In addition to the association members' own preoccupation with astronomy, one of the main goals from the beginning has been to spread astronomical knowledge to the public.

Specialist groups and working groups

Working groups and project groups offer members the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in specialist areas. In particular, the members deal with the moon , the sun and deep sky - objects ; but theoretical topics such as sidereal and synodic periods of rotation are also dealt with.

The creation of a specialist library with more than 1200 titles and over 25 specialist journals as well as a media library with several thousand slides, overhead projector slides, photos, posters and video films was an inevitable and necessary prerequisite for the work of the observatory. Courses such as the “Telescope Driver's License” and “Star-Galaxies-Cosmos” impart basic knowledge in the various sub-areas of astronomy and amateur astronomy to everyone .

Instruments

Observations are made from the roof of the Krupp-Gymnasium in Duisburg-Rheinhausen with a 10-inch Newtonian telescope and a 4-inch refractor with a focal length of 2 meters.
