Tappan Wentworth

Tappan Wentworth (born February 24, 1802 in Dover , New Hampshire , †  June 12, 1875 in Lowell , Massachusetts ) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1855 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tappan Wentworth attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his 1826 admission to the bar, he began in York County , Maine to work in this profession. In 1833 he moved his office and residence to Lowell. In his new home he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . From 1836 to 1841 he was a member of the Lowell Town Council. Between 1848 and 1866 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional election of 1852 Wentworth was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Horace Mann on March 4, 1853 . Since he was not confirmed in 1854, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1855 . These were shaped by the events and discussions leading up to the civil war . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Tappan Wentworth practiced as a lawyer again in addition to his political work in the state legislature of Massachusetts. He died in Lowell on June 12, 1875.
