Michael Joseph Harrington (born September 2, 1936 in Salem , Massachusetts ) is a former American politician . Between 1969 and 1979 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Michael Harrington attended St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers until 1954 and then studied at Harvard University until 1958 . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard and his admission to the bar in 1961, he began to work in this profession. In 1962 and 1963 he still studied administration, also at Harvard University. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1960 to 1963 he was a member of the Salem City Council; between 1964 and 1969 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . In 1968 he was a member of the state executive committee of his party.

After the death of MP William H. Bates , Harrington was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due by-election for the sixth seat of Massachusetts , where he took up his new mandate on September 30, 1969. After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1979 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell . In 1978 Michael Harrington renounced another candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he no longer appeared politically. He spends his retirement in Beverly .
