Jacob Crowninshield
Jacob Crowninshield (born March 31, 1770 in Salem , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † April 15, 1808 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1803 and 1808 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Jacob Crowninshield was the older brother of Benjamin Williams Crowninshield (1772-1851), who was also a congressman and US naval master . After finishing school, he worked in merchant shipping as a captain and trader for his father's company. With the America he brought the first elephant to America from Calcutta . He became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In 1798 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives in a by-election. In 1801 he was elected to the Massachusetts Senate. Thomas Jefferson, who has now been elected US President , offered him the post of Minister of the Navy in his cabinet , which he refused for health reasons.
In the congressional election of 1802 , Crowninshield was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of Massachusetts, where he succeeded William Shepard on March 4, 1803 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on April 15, 1808 . Between 1805 and 1807 he was chairman of the Committee on Commerce and Crafts. During his tenure as Congressman in 1803, the Louisiana Purchase made by President Jefferson, the United States was significantly expanded. In 1804 the twelfth amendment was ratified.
