Jefferson Cabinet
Thomas Jefferson emerged as the third president of the United States in one of the bitterest election campaigns in US history . Under his predecessor John Adams , whom he defeated in the 1800 election , he had held the office of vice president . The election of Jefferson as a member of the Democratic Republican Party marked the first change of power in US history after the administration of federalist Adams.
With Treasury Secretary Samuel Dexter and Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert , two members of the predecessor's cabinet remained in office after the beginning of Jefferson's presidency. However, both were replaced within the following year. Secretary of State James Madison succeeded Jefferson.
