Cabinet Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was the first President of the United States since Andrew Jackson to serve two full terms. He prevailed in 1868 as the Republican candidate against the Democrat Horatio Seymour , then four years later against the Democrat-backed Liberal Republican Horace Greeley , who advocated a breakaway of the Republicans. Despite clear electoral successes, from a historical perspective he is one of the weakest US presidents, which is also due to the numerous corruption scandals during his term in office.
This is also documented in the listing of his cabinet . Treasury Secretary William Adams Richardson lost his post to a scandal, as did Secretary of War William W. Belknap . Vice President Schuyler Colfax was forced to forego a second candidacy. However, Justice Minister Amos T. Akerman also resigned in protest against the growing corruption within the cabinet. Ultimately, all ministerial posts were filled within the eight-year term of Grant.
