Madison cabinet
James Madison was the fourth President of the United States, and the third after George Washington and Thomas Jefferson , to serve two consecutive terms. In 1808 he won as a candidate of the Democratic-Republican Party against the federalist Charles Cotesworth Pinckney , four years later against the Democratic Republican DeWitt Clinton , an internal party opponent who positioned himself against the British-American War of 1812.
Madison was the only president with two alternates who did not survive their terms in office. George Clinton died after three years in office, his successor Elbridge Gerry after one and a half years. It was the first time in US history that there was a vacancy in the office of Vice President.
Madison made staff changes in all ministries during his eight-year presidency. There were four official naval ministers; after the move from William Harris Crawford to the Treasury in October 1816, George Graham also held the post on the following March provisionally after the end of Madison's tenure.
