John Adams cabinet
John Adams succeeded the first incumbent George Washington as President of the United States . He was the first president to be elected as a party candidate: Adams was a federalist , while his opponent in the 1796 election , Thomas Jefferson , was from the Democratic-Republican Party . Jefferson was only barely defeated by Adams, but became vice-president due to the electoral system at the time . Four years later , Adams faced Jefferson again, but lost and was the first US president to be elected from office. Although several federalist candidates ran in the following years, he remained the only president this party ever put.
Compared to the cabinet of George Washington Adams made no changes in practice; he reappointed all five incumbent ministers, Charles Lee (Justice) and Joseph Habersham (Post Office) also remaining until the end of Adams's presidency. John Adams also created the Ministry of the Navy in 1798 , which Benjamin Stoddert took over.
