McKinley Cabinet
William McKinley is one of two presidents in the history of the United States who won their two elections against the same opponent; in his case he won in 1896 and 1900 as a Republican against the Democrat William Jennings Bryan . In addition to McKinley, this also applied to Dwight D. Eisenhower , who twice served Adlai Stevenson jr. conquered.
The only member of his cabinet who had any previous experience in government at the federal level was John Sherman . He had served as Treasury Secretary under President Hayes between 1877 and 1881. McKinley appointed him Secretary of State, but replaced him after a year by William R. Day , who in turn was replaced by John Hay after less than five months .
McKinley took the oath of office for the second time in March 1901; on September 5 of the same year he was critically injured in an assassination attempt by Leon Czolgosz . The president died nine days later, and he was succeeded by Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt, who had only been in office since March . The office of vice president had previously been vacant since Garret Hobart's death in 1899.
