Wilson cabinet
With Woodrow Wilson , the second candidate was only the Democratic Party since the end of the Civil War to the President of the United States elected; only Grover Cleveland had done this before him . Wilson defeated incumbent William Howard Taft in 1912 and also prevailed four years later against Republican Charles Evans Hughes .
Wilson created two new agencies, the Department of Commerce and the Department of Labor . These had previously been united in the Ministry of Commerce and Labor .
