Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest president in United States history . At the age of 42, he took office on September 14, 1901, after his predecessor William McKinley was assassinated. Roosevelt had previously served under him as Vice President since March of that year . In the presidential election in 1904 he was able to defend his office against the Democrat Alton B. Parker without difficulty.
Roosevelt's presidency was marked by numerous staff changes in his cabinet . So in the seven and a half years there were six naval ministers and five postal ministers. Only Agriculture Secretary James Wilson remained in office for a full eight years. Roosevelt's successor William Howard Taft held the post of Secretary of War between 1904 and 1908.
During Roosevelt's tenure, a new agency was created, the Department of Commerce and Labor , with George B. Cortelyou as its first director . In the following years he also took over the offices of post minister and finance minister.
Roosevelt's Minister of the Navy from 1905 to 1906 and Minister of Justice from 1906 to 1909, Charles Joseph Bonaparte , was a grandson of Jérôme Bonaparte , the younger brother of Napoleon I.
