Truman Handy Newberry (* 5. November 1864 in Detroit , Michigan ; † 3. October 1945 in Grosse Pointe , Michigan) was an American business leaders , politicians of the Republican Party and both Secretary of the Navy of the United States as well as US Senator for the state of Michigan.

biography

The son of John Stoughton Newberry , a member of the US House of Representatives , studied at Yale University after attending school and graduated in 1885. He was then manager of the Bay City & Alpena Alpena Railway based in Detroit and then from 1887 to 1901 President and Treasurer of Detroit Steel & Spring Co. In the meantime, he did his military service in the 1898 Spanish-American War US Navy . Later, he was a board member of Cleveland-Cliffs , a producer of iron ore - pellets .

On November 1, 1905, he was first assistant to the US Navy Minister ( Assistant Secretary of the Navy ), and held that office until 1908. On December 1, 1908 Truman Handy Newberry of President Theodore Roosevelt eventually even the Secretary of the Navy ( United States Secretary of the Navy ) in his cabinet . He held this cabinet post until the end of Roosevelt's term on March 4, 1909, making him the sixth Secretary of the Navy during Roosevelt's eight-year presidency.

As a representative of the Republicans, he was elected US Senator in 1918 and held the second Senate seat ( Class 2 ) of the state of Michigan from March 4, 1919 to November 18, 1922. He then stepped back after 1921 because of election fraud ( Election overspending was convicted). However, this ruling was later overturned by the Supreme Court . Thereupon Newberry was awarded his seat again by the Senate; however, in the same resolution, concerns about campaign expenses were raised again. He then gave up his seat for good and withdrew from politics.
