Augustus Seymour Porter

Augustus Seymour Porter (born January 18, 1798 in Canandaigua , New York , † September 18, 1872 in Niagara Falls , New York) was an American politician .

Porter studied law at Union College in Schenectady . After graduating in 1818, he was accepted into the bar and practiced in Detroit , Michigan . In 1838 he was mayor of the city. On January 20, 1840 he was elected to the US Senate for the Whig Party and was a member of the Senate from January 20, 1840 to March 3, 1845. Porter was not available for renewed candidacy. In 1848 he moved to his father's house in Niagara Falls, New York. Porter died there in 1872. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery .

Augustus Seymour Porter was the nephew of Peter Buell Porter .
