Edward Spencer Abraham (born June 12, 1952 in East Lansing , Michigan ) is an American politician . He served as the 10th Secretary of Energy under President George W. Bush . In 1982 he was a co-founder of the conservative-libertarian Federalist Society .

Early years

Abraham's ancestors were Lebanese Christians . Abraham received a Juris Doctorate from Harvard University and graduated from Michigan State University's Honors College in 1974 . Prior to being elected Senator , Abraham was a lecturer at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing , Michigan. He was deputy chief of staff under Vice President Dan Quayle from 1990 to 1991. He later served from 1991 to 1993 as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee , a recruiting body for the Republican Party . He was previously chairman of their state association in Michigan from 1983 to 1990.

Before serving as Secretary of Energy, Abraham represented Michigan in the United States Senate in Washington from 1995 to 2001 . As the only American of Arab descent in the chamber he was a member of the Committees for the household, for trade, science and transport for the judiciary and for small businesses. He also chaired two sub-committees: Manufacturing and Competitiveness and Immigration. Abraham developed the templates for the "H1B Visa in Global and National Commerce Act", which developed a framework for online contracts and digital signatures, for the "Government Paperwork Elimination Act" and the "Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act", the domain names Protected by internet users and businesses against trademark and copyright infringement. He lost re-election in 2000 to Debbie Stabenow .

Energy minister

On January 20, 2001, Abraham became Secretary of Energy in the Bush Cabinet . On November 15, 2004, he announced that he would be stepping down from the post. His resignation was completed by the appointment of his successor, Samuel Bodman, on February 1, 2005.
