Federico Fabian Peña (born March 15, 1947 in Laredo , Texas ) is an American politician . Under President Bill Clinton , he was from 1993 to 1997 Minister of Transport of the United States ( United States Secretary of Transportation ).

After graduating from the University of Texas , he moved to Colorado , where he worked as a private lawyer . In 1979 he became a member of the Colorado House of Representatives , where he served as chairman of the Democratic minority group ( Minority leader ). As the first politician of Hispanic descent, he was elected Mayor of Denver in 1983 and confirmed in office in 1988.

He campaigned for the construction of high-speed corridors and implemented them with French TGV technology to the advantage of the US economy. He is a straightforward and incorruptible specialist. The success of the Superrailroad Northeast Corridor , built in two years, was one of the greatest managerial successes in America in those years in office.

After serving as Secretary of Transportation, Peña held the Clinton Cabinet in charge of the Department of Energy for a year .

He now runs an investment firm.
