Mary Elizabeth Peters (born December 4, 1948 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). She was from 2006 to 2009 as successor to Norman Mineta , the Secretary of Transportation of the United States ( United States Secretary of Transportation ).

Peters earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Phoenix and attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University . She worked for the Arizona Department of Transportation from 1985 and was named head of this agency by Governor Jane Dee Hull in 1998, which she remained until 2001. After the election of George W. Bush as US President , she was the head of the Federal Highway Administration until 2005 . When Norman Mineta, the only Democrat in the Bush Cabinet , resigned in July 2006, Peters was appointed by the President as his successor. She held office until the end of Bush's tenure in January 2009.

Mary Peters has been married to Terry Peters since 1966, with whom she has three grown children.
