Rodney E. Slater
Rodney Earl Slater (born February 23, 1955 in Marianna , Lee County , Arkansas ) is an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). Under US President Bill Clinton he was US Secretary of Transportation from 1997 to 2001 .
Career
Slater studied at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Arkansas , where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1980 .
From 1979 to 1980 Slater was a research fellow on the State Judiciary Committee of the Constitutional Convention of Arkansas, from 1980 staff of the Attorney General of Arkansas. He was appointed to various government roles by then Governor Bill Clinton. Slater was also the director of the Arkansas State University Committee on Government Affairs during this time .
When Clinton became President of the United States in 1993, Slater became the first African-American chairman of the Federal Highway Administration . In 1997, Slater was named United States Secretary of Transportation. He was the second African-American to hold this post after William Thaddeus Coleman .
For his projects, Slater received the support of both parties in Congress:
- Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century ( TEA-21 ), which made a record $ 200 billion investment in transportation services
- Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment Reform Act for the 21st Century ( AIR-21 ), which provided a $ 46 billion investment to protect the security of the national aviation system
- Negotiations on open skies agreements with other countries
After the election of George W. Bush as the new US President, Rodney Slater left office in 2001.
Since 2010, Slater has been an attorney with Patton Boggs LLP., Where he leads the transportation division and works on infrastructure projects. He is also a partner in James Lee Witt Associates , a risk management company led by former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency , James Lee Witt .
He currently serves on the board of directors of Africare and the Harlem Dance Theater. He is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the United Way of America . Slater has served on the boards of Delta Air Lines , Verizon and Kansas City Southern (since 2001).
In late July 2006, it was announced that Slater was part of a group of Stan Kasten investors who had bought the Washington Nationals major league baseball team .
