Anthony Foxx (born April 30, 1971 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is an American politician . The Democratic former mayor of Charlotte served as United States Secretary of Transportation in President Barack Obama's cabinet from July 2, 2013 to January 20, 2017 .

Life

Anthony Foxx, who was raised by his single mother and grandparents, graduated from West Charlotte High School . He then enrolled at Davidson College in Davidson , from which he graduated in 1993. In college itself he was elected the first African American Head Boy. After studying law at New York University , he earned his doctorate in law in 1996.

As a young attorney, Foxx worked briefly with a law firm in Charlotte. Later, he was legal advisor on the staff of Nathaniel R. Jones , a judge on the 6th Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ( Ohio ). Early 2000s found Foxx work in the United States Department of Justice in Washington, DC also worked Foxx as a lawyer for the House Committee on the Judiciary , the Judiciary Committee in the US House of Representatives . In 2004 he was also the campaign manager for North Carolina Congressman Mel Watt .

In 2005 Foxx himself successfully ran for a seat on the city council of his hometown Charlotte. In 2007 he was confirmed in office. In 2009 he announced his candidacy for the office of mayor, and in the fall replaced Pat McCrory , the current governor of North Carolina.

Foxx, who found an unemployment rate of 13 percentage points when he took office, achieved through a massive economic program that the unemployment rate fell significantly after just one and a half years. He promised small and medium-sized companies tax advantages if they took on new employees, invested heavily in the expansion of new energy sources, and created new jobs in the construction industry by building a new runway at Charlotte Airport . Thanks to a visit to the White House , he was also able to convince the responsible employees of President Obama to invest in the infrastructure of Charlotte. President Obama himself visited Charlotte in 2012.

On April 28, 2013, Obama announced Foxx's nomination as the next United States Secretary of Transportation. He was sworn in on July 2, 2013.

Anthony Foxx is married and has two children, daughter Hillary and son Zachary with his wife Samara, also a lawyer.
