John S. Herrington

John Stewart Herrington (born May 31, 1939 in Los Angeles ) is a former American politician who was a member of the cabinet of US President Ronald Reagan during his second term as energy minister .

Life

Originally from California , Herrington received his bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1961 ; three years later he graduated from the Law School of the University of California with a Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Laws . He served as an attorney in his own law firm in San Francisco from 1965 to 1981, and as an assistant district attorney in Ventura County .

His political career began in 1981 when he was appointed Deputy Secretary of State for the Navy , which he remained until 1983 when he took up the post of Deputy Assistant for Presidential Personnel in the Executive Office . In 1985, President Reagan, who was in office with a clear majority, appointed him to his cabinet . As energy minister, he followed the the Ministry of Internal Affairs exchanged Donald P. Hodel ; he served in the government until the end of Ronald Reagan's presidency in January 1989.

Herrington then became chairman of the San Diego- based publishing company Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich , but also remained politically active by leading the Republican Party in California for some time.
