Kwame M. Kilpatrick (born June 8, 1970 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was the mayor of Detroit from 2002 until his resignation in September 2008 . He had announced his resignation after being convicted of corruption and a sex scandal.

Life

Kilpatrick attended Pelham Middle School and then Cass Technical High School . He received his bachelor degree in political science at Florida A & M University , where he also captain of the football team was. In 1999 he earned a Juris Doctor from Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State University College of Law ). He was Mayor of Detroit from 2002. His mother, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick , represented the 13th District of Michigan in the United States House of Representatives from 1997 to 2011 .

Convictions and imprisonment

In March 2008, Kilpatrick was embroiled in a sex and perjury scandal. After Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two of the eight counts in the trial in early September 2008, including corruption following a deal with the prosecutor, he was sentenced to four months' imprisonment and paid $ 1 million to the city of Detroit. He also resigned from his office as mayor of the city immediately. He also lost all of Detroit's pension entitlements in addition to his lawyer license and was banned from running for public office for five years (until September 2013). Kwame Kilpatrick served his sentence since October 28, 2008 in the Wayne County Jail.

On March 13, 2013, Kilpatrick was convicted of 24 fraud related to racketeering , a special case of organized crime, and sentenced on October 10, 2013 to 28 years in prison. Dismissal for good conduct is possible on August 1, 2037 at the earliest.

Kilpatrick is now in federal prison in El Reno , Oklahoma . There he was visited on July 16, 2015 by the incumbent President Barack Obama , who still knew him from joint political work. Obama is the first President to visit a prison while in office.
