Life

Anton Bergmeier was a member of the SS . From 1938 on, he was deputy head of the Martin Sommer detention area in Buchenwald concentration camp. Bergmeier held this position until February 1943. In the course of investigations against the former camp commandant of the Buchenwald concentration camp, Karl Otto Koch , the subject of which was corruption, unauthorized killings and mistreatment, Bergmeier was also targeted by SS judge Konrad Morgen . Martin Sommer was then imprisoned, while Bergmeier was at least released from his post as arrest warden. In February 1943 Bergmeier was transferred to the newly established 10th SS Panzer Division "Frundsberg" , where he stayed until the end of the war.

After the end of the war, Bergmeier was arrested and charged with 30 other suspects in the main Buchenwald trial in Dachau . Bergmeier was accused by witnesses of mistreating Allied prisoners. On August 14, 1947, Bergmeier was sentenced to death by hanging on account of his position in the detention area of the camp and the mistreatment that resulted in death for “helping and participating in the operations of the Buchenwald concentration camp” . The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Bergmeier was probably released from the Landsberg War Crimes Prison in the mid-1950s . Nothing is known about his further life. Bergmeier died in Pfaffenhofen in October 1984.
