Lyndon B. Johnson Cabinet
Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as President of the United States on November 22, 1963 . Shortly before, his predecessor, John F. Kennedy , had been shot in Dallas . Johnson was confirmed in office in 1964 by one of the clearest majorities in US history; After this election victory, he was also able to appoint a new Vice President , Hubert H. Humphrey .
Of the ministers who Johnson took over from John F. Kennedy without exception, Dean Rusk , Stewart Lee Udall , Orville Freeman and W. Willard Wirtz remained in the cabinet until 1969. Under Johnson's presidency, the Department of Construction and the Department of Transportation were created. In 1966, Johnson appointed the African-American Robert C. Weaver as US Secretary of Construction. It was the first time in US history that an African American became a minister.
