Charles Louis Schultze (born December 12, 1924 in Alexandria , Virginia , † September 27, 2016 in Washington, DC ) was an American economist and university professor who was both director of the Office of Management and Budget and chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers was.

Life

After attending Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC , Schultze studied economics at Georgetown University , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics) in 1948 and then a Master of Arts (MA Economics) in 1950 . During his studies he was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers in 1952 and again from 1954 to 1958.

During his tenure as a lecturer at Indiana University between 1959 and 1961, he also received a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D. Economics) from the University of Maryland in 1960 . He then took over a professorship in economics at the University of Maryland in 1961 and taught there until 1987.

After he was first Deputy Director in 1962 and then Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from January 1965 to January 1967, he was also a Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution from 1968 to 1977 .

Between 1977 and 1981 he was Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, making him one of President Jimmy Carter's closest economic policy advisers .

After completing this position, he returned to the Brookings Institution in 1981 and was again a Senior Fellow until 1987. Schultze, who was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1969 and also became a Fellow of the National Association for Business Economics, was also elected President of the American Economic Association in 1984 . Most recently, he was director of economic studies at the Brookings Institution between 1987 and 1990 and published numerous articles in specialist journals such as The American Economic Review and several specialist books .

He was also a member of the Economic Advisory Board of New York City- based private equity firm Warburg Pincus .
