Jason Lee Furman (born August 18, 1970 in New York ) is an American economist and former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President of the United States .

Life

Jason Furman was born the son of entrepreneur and lawyer Jay Furman and his wife, child psychologist Gail Furman. He grew up in New York City and attended the private Dalton School on the Upper East Side . In 1992 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Harvard University , in 1993 a Master of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics , in 1995 a Master of Arts in Political Science from Harvard University and - after having worked for some time outside the university - 2003 a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. His dissertation was supervised by Greg Mankiw . Furman's research includes the topics of fiscal policy , tax policy , health economics , social security and monetary policy . As a visiting professor , he taught at Yale University (2001-2002), Columbia University (2002-2003) and New York University (from 2005).

From 1996 to 1997, the Democrat Furman was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers under Joseph Stiglitz during the reign of Bill Clinton , with whom he moved to the World Bank in 1997 . From 1999 to 2000 he was the White House Assistant for Economic Policy . As an economics advisor, he supported the presidential candidacies of Al Gore (2000), Wesley Clark (2003-2004), John Kerry (2004) and Barack Obama (2008). From 2001 to 2002 he was director of Sebago Associates, from 2004 to 2006 at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, from 2007 to 2008 director of the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution and from 2009 to 2013 deputy director of the National Economic Council . In August 2013 he succeeded Alan B. Krueger as Director of the Council of Economic Advisers . He held this post until President Obama's tenure ended in January 2017.

He is married to Eve Gerber and has a son and a daughter.
