Murray Lew Weidenbaum (born February 10, 1927 in Bronx , New York City , † March 20, 2014 in Clayton , Missouri ) was an American economist and university professor who was both Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers was.

Life

After attending school, Weidenbaum studied economics at the City College of New York , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1948 . He completed a subsequent postgraduate degree at Columbia University in 1949 with a Master of Arts (MA) before receiving a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) from Princeton University in 1958 .

Since 1964 he was a professor at Washington University in St. Louis , where he was head of the department of economics from 1966 to 1969. Later he was from 1969 to 1971 Undersecretary of the Treasury (Assistant Secretary of the Treasury) , where he was responsible for economic policy. He then returned to Washington University and founded the Center for the Study of American Business in 1975, which in 2001 was renamed The Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government, and Public Policy in his honor.

In 1981 he became chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and as such was one of the closest advisers to President Ronald Reagan until 1982 . He was then in the reign of Reagan from 1983 to 1989 member of the President's Economic Policy Advisory Board, another body advising the US President on economic issues.

Teaching and other functions

In addition, he resumed his teaching activities at Washington University, where he most recently held the Edward Mallinckrodt Chair and became Honorary Chairman of the Weidenbaum Center for the Study of American Business. At times, he was also chairman of the US Congress commission established for consideration of the trade deficit (US Trade Deficit Review Commission) .

He also worked in the private sector and not only worked for the oil company Tesoro and as an economist at Boeing , but also a member of the board of directors of the department store chain The May Department Stores Company.

Weidenbaum was also involved in numerous economic policy organizations and was a member of the advisory bodies of the American Council for Capital Formation, the American Enterprise Institute , the Center for Strategic Tax Reform and the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI). In addition, he was a Fellow of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) and temporarily worked at the Annapolis Center for Environmental Quality, the Association for Technical Communication, as a trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and at the Midwest Economic Association .

In 2007 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
