Laura D'Andrea Tyson (born June 28, 1947 in New Jersey ) is an American economist and professor. From January 2002 until the end of 2006 she was the first female dean of the London Business School .

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College in 1969 and a doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974, she became Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley in 1977 . In 1990 she was appointed to a chair for business administration and returned there in 2007.

From 1998 to 2001 she was Dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California and also served as a consultant in the Clinton administration . From 1993 to 1995 she was Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers and from 1995 to 1996 Chair of the National Economic Council . As chief economic advisor to the president , Tyson played a key role in Clinton's economic and trade policy during his first term in office. She has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1987 . In 2002 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In addition to her teaching activities, she is active on board and supervisory bodies and as a consultant for various global companies such as Morgan Stanley , Eastman Kodak Company and SBC Communications.
