The American Economic Association (AEA) was founded in Saratoga , New York in 1885 by Richard T. Ely , Henry C. Adams, and Edwin RA Seligman . It was a US-American association of economists modeled after the Verein für Socialpolitik , but has developed into an international association over time. It is based in Nashville ( Tennessee ), USA .
The current chair is Olivier Blanchard (2018). Predecessors in recent years were Alvin E. Roth (2017), Robert J. Shiller (2016) and Richard H. Thaler (2016).
Importance of the AEA
With a little over 18,000 members (as of 2015), the AEA is one of the largest associations in economics. Although it is based in the USA, its members are extremely international. The most important goals are formulated in their founding statutes:
- Promotion of economic research
- Publication of scientific research
- Promotion of free economic discourse
The American Economic Review, published since 1911, is one of the most influential and high-profile publications in the world of economics.
The AEA also operates the EconLit literature database, which is important for economic research, and awards the John Bates Clark Medal, a prestigious research award .

The AEA was founded in Saratoga, New York , in 1885 by a small group of economically interested scientists . In February 1932, she moved to Washington, DC .
