The Journal of Economic Perspectives ( JEP ) is a four times a year scientific journal on economic topics. It has been published by the American Economic Association since 1987 . The magazine was started by Carl Shapiro , Timothy Taylor and Joseph E. Stiglitz . All articles are freely accessible or free of charge after registration.

object

The Journal of Economic Perspectives positions itself between the general press and specialized journals of individual economic sub-disciplines. Articles of the JEP should bring together the results of current economic research, analyze public policy from an economic point of view, stimulate the cross-fertilization of different fields of research, make economic thinking more accessible - especially in teaching - and also deal with the subject of economics itself. Articles are not, as usual, submitted by authors. Instead, the editors request articles on selected topics from authors.

A key criterion is the focus on clear language rather than jargon. This should also bridge the gap between theory and advice, as well as between the sub-disciplines. In this goal, the founding editors were at one with the American Economic Association , which has published the journal since its inception. Another feature is the publication of a wide range of ideas, including those that you as editor did not support. This "marketplace of ideas" was intended to stimulate discussion across the entire community of economists. Finally, the journal differs from others in that authors are invited to write for the JEP rather than authors sending manuscripts to the JEP.

editorial staff

The Journal of Economic Perspectives is led by Enrico Moretti as editor, Gordon Hanson and Heidi Williams as co-editors, Timothy Taylor as chief of duty and an assistant editor. In addition, 12 associated editors are available as support.

reception

In the list of journals in the Handelsblatt Ranking VWL (2010), the JEP is ranked 119th among all economic journals. A study by the French economists Pierre-Phillippe Combes and Laurent Linnemer ranks the journal in the third best category A, ranking it 45th out of 600 economic journals.

The impact factor of the Journal of Economic Perspectives was in 2012 at 3,489. In the statistics of the Social Sciences Citation Index , the journal was ranked 8th out of 333 journals in the economics category with this impact factor .

25 years after its founding, Stiglitz rated the JEP as successful, as many articles had 1000 or more registered citations in Google Scholar .
