The John Bates Clark Medal is a prestigious award from the American Economic Association .

The John Bates Clark Medal is awarded to the “American economist under forty years of age who has made a significant contribution to economic thinking and knowledge”. “American” refers to the place of creation, not to nationality; In 2010 , Esther Duflo from France, who teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , won. Until 2009, the awards took place every two years. The medal has been awarded annually since 2010.

The award, named after the American neoclassical economist John Bates Clark (1847–1938), is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of economics , along with the Swedish Reichsbank's Prize for Economics in memory of Alfred Nobel . Twelve of the award winners later also won the more frequently awarded Nobel Prize, on average after a waiting period of 20 years.
