Raj Chetty

Raj Chetty (born August 4, 1979 ) is an American economist and professor of economics at Stanford University . Until 2015 he taught at Harvard University .

In 2008, the Economist named him one of eight top young economists, highlighting Chetty's contributions to state economics, where his research combines empirical evidence and economic theory to drive the development of more effective economic policies.

education

After graduating from the University School of Milwaukee in 1997 as the best in his class , Raj Chetty studied at Harvard College, from which he received a BA in economics in 2000 with the top grade summa cum laude . Chetty then received a PhD from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in economics.

Professional background

After receiving his PhD, Chetty began his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley , before being promoted to Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2008 . From 2007 to 2008 conducted research Chetty as a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University . At the same time, Chetty began working as a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in 2003 , where he was promoted to Research Associate in 2007. Since 2008 he has been co-director of the Public Economics Program at NBER. Finally, in 2009, Chetty moved to Harvard University as Professor of Economics , where he is one of the youngest professors in the university's history. There he is director of the Lab for Economic Applications and Policy.

Chetty's research has been published in many prestigious economic journals , including Econometrica , the Quarterly Journal of Economics , the American Economic Review , the Journal of Political Economy , the Review of Economic Studies, and the Journal of Finance .

In addition, Chetty has been editor of the Journal of Public Economics since 2009 and was previously editor of the Journal of Economic Literature (2007–2010).

Since 2011 he has also been a member of the official economic advisory committee of the Congressional Budget Office .

Awards, grants and memberships

Raj Chetty has been a MacArthur Fellow of the MacArthur Foundation since 2012 and a Fellow of the Econometric Society since 2012 . Furthermore Chetty since 2008, a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation won and has a number of important economics prizes, including the Economic Policy Best Paper Prize of the American Economic Journal (2012), the Young Labor Economist Award of the Institute for the Study of Work (2010), the Distinguished Research Affiliate Award from CESIfo (2008), and the Best Dissertation Prize from the National Tax Association (2003). He was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal in 2013, elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2018 .

According to the economic publications database IDEAS , Chetty is one of the 3% of the most research-intensive economists in the overall ranking (831th place). Among other criteria that take his age into account, Chetty is clearly one of the top 5% of the economists recorded in the database. Chetty's most cited article is entitled " Salience and Taxation: Theory and Evidence " (2009) and co- authored with Adam Looney and Kory Kroft . This article explores the public finance assumption that individuals fully maximize their utility in terms of tax incentives using two empirical experiments. Both experiments show that the awareness that a tax exists has a significant influence on individual buying behavior. Building on these findings, Chetty, Looney, and Kroft then develop a model of limited rationality to explain the influence of tax perception on individual buying behavior.
