American Economic Journal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Economic Journal is a group of four economics journals published by the American Economic Association . The names of these journals consist of the prefix American Economic Journal and the scientific subject in which the journal specializes: American Economic Journal: Applied Economics , American Economic Journal: Economic Policy , American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics and American Economic Journal: Microeconomics .

history

The American Economic Association (AEA) founded an ad hoc committee for journals in 2003, chaired by Robert Halls , which recommended in April 2006, based on a three-year study, that the AEA should create four new journals. One of the reasons given was that almost all academic societies publish more than three journals, and that the addition of new authors would increase the diversity of authorship. Other reasons included the higher price segment of empirical journals in economics, most of which are published by Elsevier , and the American Economic Review's inability to handle the high number of article suggestions.

The Executive Committee of the AEA approved the recommendation regarding the publication of four new specialist journals in 2006; publication was set to start in 2009. The then President of the AEA, George Akerlof , set up a search committee to find editors for the new journals.

Although all four journals are published on a quarterly basis, the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics is the only one of the four journals of which there are four issues for 2009. The remaining three publications had only two editions in 2009, but had appeared with four publications per year since 2010.

American Economic Journal: Applied Economics

The American Economic Journal: Applied Economics publishes articles dealing with applied economics, particularly empirical microeconomic topics. Research for this magazine include labor economics , microeconomic development economics , health economics , education , demographics , empirical corporate finance , empirical international trade , empirical behavioral economics and empirical political economy . To liven up the academic debate, the magazine set up an online discussion forum in which contributions that have already been published can be commented on. Esther Duflo is currently the editor-in-chief .

American Economic Journal: Economic Policy

The American Economic Journal: Economic Policy publishes articles dealing with economic policy and its influence on economic outcomes. Among the areas covered by this magazine research areas include public economics, city economics , health economics , education , welfare economics , institutional economics , the economic analysis of law , the market regulation and environmental economics . Alan Auerbach was elected as the first editor-in-chief .

American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics

The American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics publishes research articles on macroeconomics , including topics such as aggregate fluctuations and economic growth. Academic contributions that could be printed in the magazine, for example, from the monetary theory , industrial organization theory , public economics , labor economics , political economy , public finance, international economics and development economics originate.

The magazine's first editor-in-chief was Olivier Blanchard . He resigned in 2009 on the grounds that his duties as chief economist of the International Monetary Fund would not be compatible with his work as editor-in-chief of the magazine in the context of the current financial crisis .

American Economic Journal: Microeconomics

The American Economic Journal: Microeconomics is a journal that publishes articles on microeconomic theory. Fields of research represented in this journal include industrial organization theory , international trade theory , political economy, and finance .
