Peter R. Orszag

Peter Richard Orszag (born December 16, 1968 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American economist . From January 2007 to November 2008 he served as director of the Congressional Budget Office , responsible for budget planning for the United States Congress . Subsequently, from January 20, 2009, he held the post of Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the cabinet of US President Barack Obama . He resigned from this post on July 30, 2010.

Life

After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy , he earned an AB summa cum laude in Economics from Princeton University in 1991 and a Ph.D. in economics at the London School of Economics , which was made possible by a Marshall scholarship.

After completing his studies, he worked as a Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and as a Senior Economist and Senior Adviser on the Clinton Administration's Council of Economic Advisers from 1997 to 1998. He also founded the advisory group Sebago Associates , which became Competition Policy Associates and subsequently from the FTI Consulting Inc. was acquired. Orszag then worked as a Joseph A. Pechman Senior Fellow and Assistant Director of Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution , where he led the Hamilton Project and the Retirement Security Project .

Orszag began his tenure as the seventh director of the Congressional Budget Office on January 18, 2007. On November 18, 2008, it was announced that President-elect Obama had appointed him future director of the Office of Management and Budget . With effect from July 30, 2010, he resigned from this office. Most recently there had been allegations against Orszag that he was unable to cope with the high national deficit. Jacob Lew , who had already headed the OMB between 1998 and 2001, was nominated as his successor ; its confirmation by the Senate took place in November 2010.

Shortly thereafter, Orszag joined Citibank . In May 2016 he moved to Lazard .

Peter Orszag lives in Washington, DC In 2010 he married news anchor Bianna Golodryga , with whom he has two children. There are two other children from a previous marriage.

His father, Steven , who died in May 2011, was a respected physicist and mathematician.
