James A. Garfield , who was elected President of the United States in 1880 , served the second-shortest term in US history. 199 days after he was sworn in, he succumbed to injuries inflicted by Charles J. Guiteau in an assassination attempt in Washington on July 2, 1881 .
In his brief tenure, Garfield made no changes to the composition of his cabinet . He was succeeded by Vice President Chester A. Arthur .
