Forum of the New European Left

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Forum of the New European Left (NELF) is an amalgamation of 18 communist , left-socialist and green-left parties and organizations from 16 European countries. The forum was constituted in November 1991 at a meeting of Western European left parties organized by the United Left of Spain in Madrid.

Against the background of the collapse of the real socialist systems in Eastern Europe, a new definition of socialist politics was sought in view of the changed situation , but initially a new form of international cooperation to enable a regular exchange of opinions and experiences.

In 2003/04 the party of the European Left (EL) was founded out of the NELF . The NELF continued to exist for the time being, also because not all NELF members joined the EL.

A youth association, the European Network of Democratic Young Left , developed from the NELF in 1994 and a women's network in 2007.
