Helmut Scholz (politician, 1954)
Helmut Scholz (born June 21, 1954 in East Berlin ) is a German politician ( Die Linke ). He has been a member of the European Parliament since the European elections in 2009 and defended his mandate in the 2014 and 2019 elections .
Life and work
Helmut Scholz is the son of DBD politician Paul Scholz and his wife Lieselotte. He graduated from high school in Königs Wusterhausen in 1972 and studied international relations at MGIMO in Moscow from 1974 . In the GDR Scholz worked for the Foreign Ministry and from 1983 to 1986 also in the embassy in China. As a profession, he states the head of international politics at LINKEN . He is a member of the ver.di union .
Political party
Helmut Scholz was a member of the SED . In the 1990s he worked on developing international relations for the then PDS . From 1991 to 1992 he was a member of the party executive committee of the PDS, from 2006 to 2007 that of the Left Party.PDS and until 2010 that of the party Die Linke. He is a board member of the European Left Party .
For the European elections in 2009 , his party nominated him for eighth place on the list. The Left won eight of the 99 German mandates with a result of 7.5 percent, so Scholz moved in directly. He became a member of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left , which he represented in the Committee on International Trade as a full member and in the Committee on Foreign Affairs and in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs as an alternate member.
For the 2014 European elections , the party delegates took fourth place on the list, so that Scholz defended his parliamentary mandate with an election result of 7.4 percent (7 of the 96 German seats). In the 8th legislature of the European Parliament (2014–2019) he represented his group in the Committee on International Trade and in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (2014–2017 as an alternate member, 2017–2019 as a full member). Scholz was a deputy member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
At the 2019 European Congress of the party Die Linke, the delegates nominated Scholz again for fourth place on the list. With a European election result of 5.5 percent (5 of the 96 German mandates) of his party, he defended his mandate again. In the 9th legislature, Scholz is a member of the committee for international trade and a deputy member of the committee for constitutional questions.
