Kostel (German: Grafenwarth in der Unterkrain ) is a municipality in the Dolenjska ( Lower Carniola ) region in Slovenia .
The total municipality Kostel, which consists of 54 localities and hamlets, has around 681 inhabitants. It is located in southern Slovenia on the Kolpa (Eng. Kulpa ), which also forms the border with Croatia .
Kostel Castle ( Grafenwarth )
Kostel is known for what was originally the second largest castle in Slovenia. The castle was first mentioned in 1336 (as Castrum Grauenwarth ) and stands on a rock above the Kolpatal. In 1808 or 1809 it was destroyed by the French and not rebuilt. Only the so-called Lower Castle was renewed later. In 1943 the castle was finally burned down by the partisans . Since 1999 the castle has been under protection as a monument of national importance. The complex is also interesting as an archaeological site (ceramics, clay dishes).
The complex consists of the Upper (Zgornji grad) and Lower Castle (Spodnji grad), the Church of the Three Kings and the Trg settlement (German: market) within the castle walls, which have been preserved. The Ortenburgers were former owners of the castle . After the death of Count Friedrich II. In 1418 it fell to the Counts of Cilli , who expanded the castle and renamed it Grauenwarth. They built a two-meter-wide fortification wall with five towers. The fortress served to protect their krainer and cillier possessions and later to defend against the Turks . So it was part of the military border . The Turks first attacked Kostel, which was on one of their most important incursion routes, in 1476. After the death of the last Count of Cilli, Ulrich II , his possessions fell to the Habsburgs in 1456 . The last owner of the castle was Countess Ana, the granddaughter of Count Laval Nugent .
The castle complex is owned by the Republic of Slovenia , but is to be transferred to the municipality of Kostel in June 2014 because the state wants to part with some of its castles, for which it has no funds to maintain. The community itself is heavily in debt. With only 680 inhabitants, it ranks fourth in terms of per capita debt in comparison with other municipalities in Slovenia. The system is now for sale for 73,977 euros, although about 10 years ago a renovation of 6 million euros was planned by the state. Renovation work was started, but ended in the so-called 3rd construction phase. So far there are neither installations nor heating.
