International Trade Committee
The Committee on International Trade (INTA) is one of the twenty standing committees of the European Parliament . The committee chairman has been Bernd Lange ( SPD / S&D ) since July 2014 ; he was re-elected for the 9th legislative period (2019-2024) in July 2019.
The committee deals with the common commercial policy of the European Union and with all matters relating to its external economic relations . This includes, in particular, financial, economic and trade relations with third countries, international standardization and the relations between the European Parliament and international organizations dealing with trade , especially the World Trade Organization (WTO). The committee works with the interparliamentary delegations of the European Parliament.
However, the European Parliament has hardly any competences of its own in the area of the common commercial policy, so that the Committee on International Trade largely only has an advisory and observational role. An important exception is the mandatory approval of the European Parliament for the ratification of trade agreements between the EU and third countries. The Council of the European Union , which meets for this purpose as the Council for Economic and Financial Affairs , is more important for this policy area . The European Commission also plays an important role in trade policy, its responsible member is the Commissioner for Trade .
