Vladimir Karpovich Dmitriev

Vladimir Karpovich Dmitrijew ( Russian Владимир Карпович Дмитриев ; born November 24, 1868 in Smolensk ; † November 30, 1913 ) was the first Russian economist to use mathematical methods.

After studying medicine and political economy in Moscow , he began to work as a tax officer in the small town of Vonkovits in the Podolia governorate in 1896 , until tuberculosis forced him to give up this activity in 1899.

His economic essays, published between 1898 and 1902, are classic texts of economic literature. They immediately received a lot of attention from some experts such as AI Chuprow, P. Struwe and NN Shaposhnikow as well as Ladislaus von Bortkewitsch , but fell into oblivion after 1919 and were only rediscovered in the 1960s and published and introduced in English by DM Nuti in 1974.

Dmitrijew anticipated a number of theorems and techniques that count as part of economic theory today, from input-output analysis to the correct determination of labor values and production prices, including the "non-substitution theorem" of Paul Samuelson and some of Sraffa's sentences on pricing and distribution. He developed an extremely original competition theory , which could be characterized as "perfect competition in present markets".

Dmitrijew aimed for a theoretical synthesis between labor theory and marginal utility theory . He was probably the first who did not stop at the definition of “value” as “objectified work” and formulated a system of equations for calculating work values. Ladislaus von Bortkewitsch used this system in his work on the transformation problem.
