Ladislaus von Bortkewitsch

Ladislaus von Bortkewitsch (born August 7,  1868 in Saint Petersburg , † July 15,  1931 in Berlin ), also Ladislaus von Bortkiewicz or Władysław Bortkiewicz (Polish form), was a Russian economist and statistician of Polish descent who taught in Germany .

Life

Bortkewitsch studied law in St. Petersburg and then, after graduating in 1890, political economy and statistics in Strasbourg, Göttingen (1892), Vienna and Leipzig. In 1893 he received his doctorate in Göttingen with the dissertation “The mean lifespan: the methods of determining it and its relationship to mortality measurement” with Wilhelm Lexis . From 1895 he taught statistics and actuarial mathematics in Strasbourg as a private lecturer, was employed by a railway company in St. Petersburg from 1897 to 1901, teaching statistics at the same time, and in 1901 became associate professor of statistics at the University of Berlin. In 1920 he became a full professor there.

In actuarial mathematics , he examined a. a. Death rates and the Poisson distribution in statistics. In economic theory he developed a solution to the transformation problem using a formulation of the problem by Vladimir Karpowitsch Dmitrijew in labor theory of value .

He was a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences , the Royal Statistical Society , the American Statistical Association and the International Statistical Institute . One of his students was the doctor and important medical statistician Karl Freudenberg (1892–1966).
