St. Mariae Himmelfahrt is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Düren district of Mariaweiler in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia . It was built between 1878 and 1879 according to plans by August Carl Lange . The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and entered in the list of architectural monuments in Düren under No. 9/005 .

location

The parish church is located in the center of Mariaweiler on an elevated position on the corner of Lommessemstrasse / An Gut Nazareth (L 13).

General

A church in Mirwilre was first mentioned in 1308 in the liber valoris . At that time, Mariaweiler was an independent parish in the deanery Jülich , Archdiocese of Cologne . Parish patron was St. Maternus . The patronage rights were initially owned by the abbess of Cologne's Ursula Stift , in 1340 the church was incorporated into the Schwarzenbroich monastery , which Pope Clemens VI. confirmed in a document from 1351.

Since at least the 15th century the Franciscan convent Nazareth existed right next to the church, which had been dissolved by the French in 1802. Mary was especially venerated in this monastery. Presumably because of this, around 1790 the place was renamed Mariaweiler and the patronage changed from St. Maternus on the Assumption.

In 1804 the parish was already named Assumption of Mary when the diocese of Aachen was established . Between 1802 and 1825 the parish belonged to the first diocese of Aachen and then came back to the re-established archdiocese of Cologne. Mariaweiler has been part of the Aachen diocese since 1930.

Until 1962, the Herz Jesu branch in Hoven also belonged to the parish. On July 1, 1962, this branch was separated from Mariaweiler and raised to an independent parish.

Building history

The only thing known about the parish church, mentioned around 1308, is that it was located directly between the present church and the street An Gut Nazareth.

In the middle of the 19th century it was decided to build a new building and the current parish church was built right next to the old church between 1878 and 1879 according to plans by the architect August Carl Lange . The old church was then torn down.

The damage caused by World War II had been repaired by 1957. In 1982 the choir was redesigned according to plans by the architect Jean Keller.

Building description

Bell tower

St. Mary's Assumption is a three-aisled and six-bay basilica made of bricks in neo-Romanesque forms . In the east is the one-bay choir, which closes with a semicircular apse . The side aisles also close on the east side with an apse each. Sacristies are built on the north and south walls of the choir . In the west is the retracted, four-story bell tower with a rhombic roof . The church has a total of 170 seats and 300 standing places.

Furnishing

In the church there is an artfully painted relic of St. Maternus present. His legendary awakening from death by the staff of St. Peter is depicted in a choir window of the church. A pieta from the 15th century is worth mentioning among the furnishings. It comes from the Nazareth monastery. From the painting from the beginning of the 20th century, the two frescoes Moses praying before the battle and Jesus praying on the Mount of Olives in the choir have been preserved. An episcopal consecration is shown in the south aisle.

The marble altar and the octagonal tabernacle made of red marble are works by the artist Rudolf Peer from Sürth . The baptismal font in the shape of a chalice is a baroque work from 1721 and was taken over from the old church. The lid was made by Sepp Hürten in 1977.

The Kirchberg artist Matthias Esser created the ambo , two three-armed candlesticks, the altar cross, an Easter candlestick and an eternal light traffic light for the choir room in 1985 and 1986 .

The stained glass windows are works by Ernst Jansen-Winkeln from 1964 and depict religious motifs.

organ

The organ was built in 1992 by Orgelbau Romanus Seifert & Sohn in Kevelaer . The instrument has 15 registers and 3 transmissions on two manuals and pedal . The key actions and stop actions are mechanical.
